Asteroid 2023BU Passed Safely Very Close to Earth and Moon

A small asteroid is predicted to make one of the closest approaches of a near-Earth object ever recorded.

Asteroid 2023 BU will zoom in on the tip of South America on Thursday, January 26 at around 4:24 PM PT (19:24 PM ET), just 2,200 miles (3,600 km) above our planet's surface. Although this encounter will take place within the orbit of geosynchronous satellites, there is no risk of the asteroid impacting Earth.

The asteroid was discovered by amateur astronomer Gennadiy Borisov on Saturday (January 21st), and in three days a series of observatories around the world made dozens of observations, helping astronomers better improve its orbit.

By 2023 BU is estimated to be 11.5 to 28 feet (3.5 to 8.5 meters). Objects of this size approach the Earth on average once a year.
